Business and Multimedia Content Creation Winstone tests, from Veritest provide a performance metric with the latest standard Business and Professional Desktop Publishing and Content Creation software.

Winstone Benchmarks
Business Application and Multimedia Content Creation Performance

Applications used in the Business Winstone tests include:

  • Five Microsoft Office 2002 applications (Access, Excel, FrontPage, PowerPoint, and Word)
  • Microsoft Project 2000
  • Lotus Notes
  • WinZip 8.0
  • Norton AntiVirus
  • Netscape Communicator

The Business Winstone tests have always favored AMD Athlon processors over the Pentium 4.  Perhaps this is due to the fact that the applications that are tested are based on long standing legacy code, that doesn't take advantage of the Pentium 4's architecture but one thing is for certain.  If you are just going to run Word Processors, Web Browsers and various Desktop Utilities, the Athlon XP certainly provides an excellent price/performance curve.

Applications used in the Multimedia Content Creation Winstone tests include:

  • Adobe Photoshop 7.0
  • Adobe Premiere 6.0
  • Macromedia Director 8.5.1
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver 4
  • Microsoft Windows MediaTM Encoder 7.01.00.3055
  • Netscape 6.2.3
  • NewTek's LightWave 7.5
  • Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 6.0

Multimedia Content Creation, on the other hand, is the P4's strong suit.  Running bandwidth intensive applications like Windows Media Encoder, exploits the Pentium 4 3.2GHz architecture with its high speed 800MHz system bus.  We should note however, that the 2003 version of the CC Winstone test, now includes NewTek Lightwave 7.5.  This 3D Graphics and Animation platform seems to heavily favor the Pentium 4, whether it be as a result of compiler optimization or the system bandwidth advantage of the P4.

With the old Content Creation 2002, the race would have been a bit closer for the Athlon.  However, like all things, time marches on and developers are now coding applications that specifically take advantage of the Pentium 4 architecture.  That's not to say that Lightwave weights particularly heavy in this benchmark.  As a matter of fact, there are 7 other applications tested here along with Lightwave, that are also weighted equally.  Plain and simple the 3.2GHz Pentium 4 has a commanding 26% lead over the Athlon XP 3200+ in this test.
