ATI RADEON 9500 Pro Performance Analysis
Seriously Powerful Mainstream Graphics

Next we have our personal favorite Flight / Chopper Sim, Novalogic's Comanche 4, up for a round of benchmarks.  We've been fans of this franchise since the original Comanche, with what was then a revolutionary "Voxel Graphics" engine.  My how things have changed with the new Comanche 4 and its use of Pixel and Vertex Shaders to paint its impressive scenery.

Once again, the Radeon 9500 Pro beats out the GeForce 4 line of products.  The numbers don't lie here folks. This new mainstream ATi card is showing performance beyond the level of NVIDIA's current high end product.  That is, at least until the GeForce FX is unleashed in the coming months.

Let's clean up those jaggies and sharpen those textures a bit.

In this test run, we ran all competitors at 4X AA with their respective 8X Aniso Filtering settings.  This is what we would term as a sound thrashing by the Radeons.  Furthermore, even though this benchmark, with its high intensity action scenes, is extremely demanding on the CPU and Graphics Subsystem, at 1024X768 with 4X AA and 8X Ansio Filtering, things are very much "playable" with the Radeon 9500 Pro.

We might as well Quake but we're going high end with this tired old game engine.

One word... OUCH!  Again, the Radeon 9500 Pro handily beats out both the GeForce 4 Ti 4200 and GeForce 4 Ti 4600 product,  even with 6X AA enabled.  If you haven't already, you should take a look at one of the new Radeons running at 1280X1024 with 6X AA and 16X Aniso, in this game.  It actually makes Quake 3 look somewhat up to date.  Bring on Doom 3!

We'll have to settle with JK II and UT 2003 for now though.  So let's have a look there.
